Homelessness Prevention Department

Housing First’s Homelessness Prevention Department (HPD) is charged with aiding individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at imminent risk of homelessness. Three federal grants are utilized by the HPD team to carry out their charge, the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Grant, the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), and the Continuum of Care Program (CoC).

The SSVF program is exclusively for veterans and their families who are either literally homeless or are at imminent risk of losing their housing. The Veteran’s income must not exceed 50% of the area’s Average Monthly Income (AMI). In addition to the aforementioned income requirement, the Veteran must have an acceptable discharge status.

The ESG program provides short-term and medium-term assistance to rapidly re-house the literally homeless and prevent homelessness when possible. The ESG program is funded by grants through Mobile County, the City of Mobile, and the State of Alabama Department of Economic and Community Development (ADECA). Each division carries its own eligibility criteria and service team.

The CoC Program funds the Family Solutions Grant (FSG) and Family Youth Solutions Grant (FYS), which are dedicated to assist families and unaccompanied youth obtain stable permanent housing by providing temporary rental assistance.
